The Shape of the Arc¶

Davan Vael does not appear in the story until late. He is present for most of it anyway — in the sentence Seren keeps returning to, in the document Seren is carrying, in the institutional infrastructure that Davan has spent eighteen years building and that the story slowly reveals is connected to things Davan did not know he was building toward.

He is not a villain. He is a careful, competent man who made careful, competent decisions inside a system that was managing something badly, and who did not ask the questions that would have required him to stop making those decisions. The story does not punish him with irony or contempt. It simply shows him the cost.

Phase 1 — The Absence (through most of Book One)¶

Davan is not present. He is looking for Seren through official channels, which are not finding him.

What the official channels tell him: His son crossed the inner-world transit threshold under his own documentation on 2847.196. Transit logs place him at Waystation Ouray-7 on 2847.197. After that, nothing registered.

What Davan does not do: He does not look through unofficial channels. He does not leverage his position on the Infrastructure Licensing Committee to access outer-ring transit data outside his jurisdiction. He waits for the official channels to produce a result.

This is either patience or avoidance, and Davan has not yet determined which.

What Davan knows about the Flicker: More than most Refined members. His committee approves infrastructure contracts for inner-world cognitive systems, which means he has seen the incident reports — the ones reclassified by Praxis, the ones attributed to manufacturing defects. He has seen them as a management problem with a management solution already in place, and he has moved on.

He has not asked whether the management solution is accurate.

Phase 2 — The Understanding (middle installments)¶

Something changes Davan's administrative view of the Flicker.

What changes it: Not stated in current canon. What is established: it arrives through official channels — something in his committee's purview that makes the Flicker's effects undeniable at a scale the manufacturing defect explanation cannot absorb. A failure event large enough to require a different response, or a document that crosses his desk with an anomaly he cannot categorise as technical.

He does not go to Guild leadership immediately. He is a careful man. He looks at the document. He looks at the incident record he has approved without examining for years. He looks at the gap.

He does not yet know his son is moving toward the same information from the other direction.

What he decides: Not stated in current canon. He is in the process of deciding when the story catches up with him.

Phase 3 — The Confrontation (Return or early Book Two)¶

The confrontation between Davan and Seren is the arc's central scene.

What both of them know by this point:

Seren knows: - What the document he carried actually is and what it connects to - What happened at Hephaistos-9 - What the Flicker research found - That the document came not from Davan's own position but from proximity to Syndra's network — and what that means about how much of Davan's position is genuinely his own - Something about his mother's work and its fate (from Hephaistos-9)

Davan knows: - That something about the Flicker is not what he was told - That his committee has been part of a management structure managing something it did not fully understand - That his son, who left with a field pack, has apparently found his way to the centre of it

What neither of them knows: Whether Davan's role was complicit in any meaningful sense or simply administrative — approving contracts without understanding what they were for.

The conversation: Not a shouting match. Not a tearful reconciliation. The specific conversation of two people who have both been right about something and both been wrong about something and neither can say cleanly which is which.

Davan says: I did not know.

Seren's response is not stated in current canon. It is the most important line he has in the story — the place where Seren decides what kind of person he is going to be.

◻ PLACEHOLDER: The full confrontation scene — when it is placed, this is the most emotionally complex scene in the Vael arc. It requires both characters to be fully developed before it can be written. It cannot be written until Seren's line is decided.

After the Confrontation¶

Not stated in current canon beyond this: Davan understands, by the end of the confrontation, that his son is not coming back to the inner worlds in the near term. He does not try to change this.

He may, eventually, understand why the sentence — you are throwing away the advantages you have been given — was both correct and completely wrong.

Whether he acts on this understanding, and how, is a question for future stories.

The Syndra Weight¶

Davan built his career in Syndra's shadow. He did not know everything she knew — she is too careful for that. But he knew enough to know there were things he was not asking, and he chose the position that allowed him not to ask them.

The confrontation with his son is also, beneath the surface, a confrontation with that choice. The career that came from proximity to Syndra's network. The document that Seren found in his household whose access level came from that proximity. The committee position that approved contracts for infrastructure whose purpose he did not examine.

He did not know. He also did not ask. The distinction is real. Whether it is enough is Seren's decision to make.

What arrives on Davan's desk that changes his view? What is the specific anomaly? (Author decision needed.)
Does Davan ever try to reach Seren through unofficial channels before the confrontation? If so, does he succeed?
What does Seren say when Davan says I did not know?
Does Davan stay in his committee position after the confrontation? Does he try to use it differently?
Does Davan and Syndra's relationship survive what Seren brings back from Hephaistos-9?
