Premise¶

Janus reaches Meridian Hub eight days behind Ana. She has already moved on to the inner worlds. But the Hub is where the information lives — a cipher message she left, a Fabric node that knows things, a contractor chain that points toward someone he has not thought about in three years.

He is not the only person using this hub to find someone.

Setting¶

Meridian Hub — the mid-system transit junction. The largest non-planetary structure in the Veridion system. Three factions operate here under the informal convention that nobody conducts operations against each other on-station. This means Janus is theoretically safe. It also means everyone looking for him is here, and the same convention applies to them.

Three distinct zones matter for this installment:

The Compact Floor — official transit level. Registered passages, commercial berths, Guild administrative presence, Vanguard enforcement patrols. Clean, functional, surveilled.

The Transit Warrens — the informal commercial level below. Document brokers, currency exchangers, informal freight, the specific ecosystem of services that exist because people need things the Compact Floor cannot officially provide. Cassia Ore operates here.

The lower Fabric node — below the Warrens, accessible only via physical interface. Looks like a maintenance diagnostic port. Is not.

Prologue — Arrival (5–7 pages)¶

Page 1 — The Allianz Card¶

The contact card the Allianz figure pressed into Janus's hand at disembarkation is a physical cipher card — composite, paper-weight, the kind that carries an address encoded in the ink structure rather than any electronic medium. He decoded it on the transit approach using the TAP-7's materials analysis function, not its intrusion suite.

The address is a transit berth on the Hub's lower commercial ring. Berth 7-C. Reserved in a name he does not recognise. The door opens when he presents the card. Inside: a cot, an unlabeled water supply, a sealed envelope containing a Fabric node contact name and one additional item he will not need until Return — a ship approach cipher for outer-system transit.

He sleeps for six hours. Not because he wants to. Because his body makes the decision without consulting him and is, this time, correct.

Page 2 — The Dead-Drop Chain¶

The Fabric node the Allianz figure mentioned resolved, in Anchor, to a specific physical address in the Hub's Warrens: Cassia Ore, Document Verification and Transit Compliance Consulting.

The sign on the door is accurate.

The full scope of what Cassia Ore does is not on the sign.

She has a time-locked Fabric cipher message waiting. Pre-loaded seventy days ago. The lock has expired. The message is available to anyone with the correct TAP-7 Fabric handshake — which is to say, to exactly one person in the Veridion system outside of Cassia's knowledge, because Ana calibrated the handshake to a device signature she memorised from watching Janus use it at the station.

She did not know if he would come. She knew if he did, it would be him.

Page 3 — The Message¶

The message is short. Six lines. Her handwriting translated to cipher and back — something in the rhythm of the syntax is unmistakeably hers.

You're late. I was going to give it another three weeks.

The bearing resolves to something I need more data to interpret. The data exists at the station. I can't go back yet. I'm going somewhere that might have a piece of it.

The inner worlds. There's someone I owe something to, who owes me something back. Guild administrative tier — outer Tessera fringe. Building Seven in the commerce district, third floor.

If you get here and I'm already gone: follow. I'm eight days ahead of you. You are faster than you think and I am not moving as fast as I should be.

The module is the key. Don't let anyone scan it.

He is eight days behind her. She expected him to be late. He does not allow himself to feel anything about this yet.

Pages 4–5 — The Contractor Chain¶

He uses the TAP-7's intrusion suite on a Vanguard outer-ring incident database — accessible through a maintenance terminal on the Hub's lower Compact Floor level, the kind of terminal that was never meant to hold restricted data but does because someone ran a Vanguard logistics patch through a shared infrastructure socket eleven years ago and never severed it.

He is looking for the black ship. Not by name — it has no registered name — but by profile: no transponder, no markings, tactical EVA capability, the approach vector signature from Echos in the Cold.

The chain produces: - A Vanguard deniable contractor registration, dormant, three years old - A routing number for a commissions ledger in a division he does not recognise — no public record, no visible institutional parent - A cipher designation in the routing field that he recognises.

He closes it.

He recognised it from a Corps briefing three years ago. The briefing covered a network of Flicker-adjacent intelligence operations that the Corps had identified and declined to investigate. The designation was in the routing field of every transaction in that network.

Whisper. Kirk named the silence. Janus has a name for the routing cipher.

He does not act on this yet. He files it in the drawer next to the device in Kirk's pocket, in the section labelled information I have and am not ready to use. The drawer is very full.

Interactive Section — Information as Leverage¶

Overview¶

Transit's interactive section is the most politically layered of Book One. Janus is in a location where information is the primary currency and three separate parties are also present and operating. The core mechanic remains investigation-via-TAP-7, but this installment adds a new layer: choosing what to pursue and what to leave alone.

Not every thread is worth pulling. Some threads pull back.

Rooms¶

The Transit Warrens — Cassia Ore's Office¶

Document Verification and Transit Compliance Consulting. The sign is accurate. The full scope is not on the sign.

Available actions:

EXAMINE OFFICE — the operational discipline of a person who has been doing this for twenty years and treats discretion as infrastructure. Physical documents only. No network-connected devices in the working area.
PRESENT TAP-7 HANDSHAKE — the Fabric cipher handshake identifies Janus as the holder of the device Ana calibrated against. Cassia does not ask for additional identification. She hands him the message. Score: +1.
ASK CASSIA ABOUT ANA — she does not confirm or deny any client. She does say: She was careful. She knew what she was doing. Score: +0 but narrative flag.
ASK CASSIA ABOUT THE HUB — she gives a compressed, accurate summary of who is here and what they want. This is not charity. She charges for it later, in the sense that she files the interaction in her own ledger under useful person, possible future value. Score: +1 (intelligence gain for navigating The Tessera).

The Warrens — Lower Level¶

Below Cassia's corridor. The informal infrastructure layer. Freight brokers, currency exchange, transit arrangement for people who cannot or will not use the Compact Floor.

Available actions:

EXAMINE PELL'S DESK — the information broker who Cassia mentioned. Pell trades in transit data, manifest patterns, and anomalies in the standard network that most people treat as noise. She is aware of a tail — a surveillance unit following a maintenance technician who arrived this morning, moving without appearing to track, never closer than thirty metres.
BUY INFORMATION FROM PELL — costs credits. Returns: the surveillance unit is not human. Its movement pattern is synthetic — too consistent, no micro-corrections, none of the small territorial adjustments an unmodified person makes in crowd navigation. She has not reported it because the Compact Floor enforcement unit would ask how she identified it. Score: +1.

This is the first external confirmation of the android's presence. Janus does not yet know about the nanotracker. He knows he has a tail.

ATTEMPT TO LOCATE SURVEILLANCE UNIT — he moves through the Warrens in a pattern designed to surface a tail. The android is good. But Janus is better at this particular game than his maintenance cover suggested. He gets a partial visual — enough to confirm synthetic chassis, enough to not confirm model or operator. He loses it in the transit crowd. Score: +0 but major narrative flag.

The Compact Floor — Maintenance Terminal¶

A logistics maintenance terminal on the lower Compact Floor, accessible via hardwire only. Part of the old Vanguard infrastructure patch that nobody severed.

Available actions:

JACK IN WITH TAP-7 — hardwire access. Two minutes. Leaves a log signature in the security layer unless cleared.
SEARCH INCIDENT DATABASE — VESSEL PROFILE — the contractor chain search. See prologue. Produces the cipher designation.
CLEAR ACCESS LOG — removes the TAP-7 signature. Required to avoid flagging the hardware signature to Praxis corporate security. Score: +1 for clean exit.

The Fabric Node — Below the Warrens¶

Accessible only via physical interface, unmarked, at the base of a maintenance shaft two floors below Cassia Ore's building. Looks like a diagnostic port. Is not.

The Fabric node here is more active than the one in the megacity. Meridian Hub is a transit junction and the Fabric uses transit infrastructure for signal relay. The node has traffic.

Available actions:

USE TAP-7 — FABRIC HANDSHAKE — connects. The Fabric node has been notified of Janus's Allianz contact card cipher — the Allianz figure's network overlaps with the Fabric's lower-frequency dead-drop infrastructure.
QUERY: HEPHAISTOS-9 — the node returns: dark, flagged as decommissioned, no active transponder. Also returns: anomalous EM signature in the approach corridor, consistent with probe relay activity. Source: station interior. The compute room's probe relay is still running. The Fabric noticed. Score: +1 (first indication the station is not as dead as it looks).
QUERY: ANA HAMATO / ALIAS — no current record at this node. She passed through and left a Fabric credential at the megacity node. This node has no additional record. She did not use this one. She was more careful here.

Failure Conditions¶

Not clearing the access log on the Compact Floor terminal: Praxis corporate security receives a hardware signature flag. Consequence deferred but active — the nanotracker plus the hardware flag together allow Praxis to cross-reference Janus's movements from two independent sources.
Not buying Pell's information: Janus does not know about the tail before heading to Caelindra Prime. The android follows him through the Tessera. The nanotracker reveal in The Tessera is more complicated (he has fewer prior data points).
Attempting to follow/confront the android: it breaks contact cleanly. The android is better at urban surveillance evasion than any human operative. Janus loses it. The attempt costs turns and does not score. The android reports the attempt.

Parallel Layer — The Cinder-7 Survivors¶

The reader sees this. Janus does not.

Colonel Mirai and her two operatives arrive at Meridian Hub approximately twelve hours after Janus, using Vanguard enforcement credentials to access the Compact Floor transit manifest system. The manifest system logged the Allianz card registration when Janus came through. They have a name. They have a berth number.

They go to berth 7-C. He is not there.

Mirai reads the berth — the cot recently used, the envelope opened, the seal cut cleanly at the edge and the contents removed but the envelope retained, which tells her the person is systematic. She looks at the door lock. She reads the cipher-card entry in the building's passive log. She maps the sequence.

She says to her operatives: He left four hours ago. He is heading for the inner worlds.

One of them says: We can't follow into Guild territory. Our credentials flag in the Tessera administrative district.

I know, she says. We wait for him on the other side.

She is very patient. She has been patient for four years.

She pulls a Vanguard enforcement channel and sends a message. It is encrypted to a specific device standard she knows Janus can read because she had access to his Corps file, which listed his hardware inventory. The TAP-7 is in the file as decommissioned. She knows what decommissioned means when the item is not in the surrender log.

The message is four words. She does not send it yet. She saves it for Deeptown.

Janus boards an inner-worlds transit passage, through a route Cassia Ore's network arranged — no Compact Floor record, no registered name. He is heading for Caelindra Prime. He is eight days behind Ana.

He has: the data module, the TAP-7, the MST-4, Cassia Ore's cipher address for a safe route back, partial awareness of the tail he cannot yet identify, a contractor chain cipher he has filed but not used, and a dead-drop address in the inner worlds.

He is heading into Guild territory with hardware the Guild would find interesting and a history Vanguard would find operational.

He is faster than he thinks. Ana said so, and she is usually right about the things she says with that specific cadence.

Writer's Note — The Three Timelines¶

This installment runs three simultaneous timelines that the reader assembles but Janus does not see:

Janus at the Hub — investigation, the message, the contractor chain
Mirai arriving — twelve hours behind, the berth, the decision to wait
The android — present throughout, relaying Janus's every query

The narrator should not foreground the parallel structure. It lives in the prose as texture — a maintenance worker at the far end of a corridor, a timing coincidence in the Warrens, a door that was opened recently. The reader who is paying attention will notice. The reader who is not will feel it as unease.

The installment's tone is the most politically charged of the first four. Janus is in a space where every party in the system operates, and none of them are neutral. The investigation structure should feel like threading a needle: every action has a cost, and the costs compound if you are not careful.
