How the parallel arcs and flashbacks fold into Book One's main Janus narrative. This is the placement spec for the Omnibus Edition: the seven authored Janus chapters are left intact; flashbacks and parallel scenes are inserted at the slots below.

The core decision: flashbacks ≠ parallel arcs

Two kinds of "not the main now" material, two different containers.

Rule: don't promote a Janus memory to a titled chapter, and don't make Gelon read like a Janus memory.

Tier 1 — Flashbacks (woven inline at triggers)

Short, set off by a rule + italics, fired by the exact sensory cue. Janus's POV, so no POV break. Source: scenes/before-the-incident-flashbacks.md (F1–F6) and scenes/janus-mirai-vantage-departure.md ("Clearance", 2843).

The Mirai backstory is folded in as a flashback in Transit, when the survivors re-enter the present. It seeds the unfinished Gate 7-C conversation so its payoff in Return (the ambush) lands with weight.

Tier 2 — Parallel arcs (a braid that collapses at Deeptown)

Each parallel scene is a titled Interlude at the chapter boundary whose timeline it shadows. The threads merge into the main narrative at Deeptown and never separate again — that convergence is the point of Book One's middle.

Passage is a main-line connective chapter, not a Tier-2 interlude. The braid has already collapsed at Deeptown, so the voyage out is single-thread Janus close-third (present tense), the same register as the chapters around it. It exists to put the reader inside the Vagabond — Yamar and Gelon's rebuilt salvage collector — and to let the six-person team live in one hull before Return puts them somewhere lethal. It hands off into Return's Act I approach (Passage ends at the station sighting; Return begins at the entry — no duplicated approach prose). Bible: Passage.

Rules that keep the braid clean

  • Interludes exist only before Deeptown. Once everyone's in the room, the braid is over; no separate Gelon/Seren POV afterward.
  • Dramatic irony in Transit/Tessera: keep Mirai-present and the Seren near-miss in Janus's POV (he "files the detail without acting on it"), so the reader knows what Janus doesn't.
  • The existing continuation (Ch IV–VII) already pre-loads compressed versions of these beats (Seren glimpsed at Meridian; Gelon's voice from orbit and Mirai's four-word message in Deeptown). The interludes expand those — continuous, not contradictory.

Tier 3 — Antagonist counterpoint (the "cold machinery")

The factions' dark side gets a face without breaking Janus POV — but not via the parallel-interlude device, which is reserved for threads that converge at Deeptown. This thread is the institution itself, and it never converges. Cold, at altitude, past tense, dossier-flat.

Who: Director Hessa Mourne — Praxis Director of Research Security; the human cause of the inciting decision and the dark mirror of Gebreysius (both meticulous and institutionally "correct"; one preserves the finding and dies, one buries it and lives). Source: scenes/hessa-mourne-counterpoint.md.

Held for Book Two: Marshal Eryn Caul (Vanguard) — her arc is the sovereign-power pivot and the Guild war, which Book One only pre-positions; introducing her now competes with Mirai for the Vanguard face. If a Book One Vanguard-operational seed is wanted, use Dann Lev (he surveilled Hephaistos-9 pre-boarding), not Caul.

Rule: counterpoints never converge with the cast and never appear after the Azimuth reveal. They are the lens widening to the machinery, then closing.

Omnibus build plan

  1. Insert F1–F6 + Mirai "Clearance" inline at the trigger points (Tier 1). ✅
  2. Insert the three parallel interludes at the chapter seams (Tier 2), past-tense close-third, under a consistent interlude header device. ✅
  3. Insert the two Mourne counterpoints (Tier 3) — C1 after Echos, C2 in Return before the reveal. ✅
  4. Write the still-missing connective beats:

The build is scripted; anchors are paragraph-boundary insertions so blocks never split a paragraph.

Typographic devices (three legible registers)

  • Chapter — red eyebrow (CHAPTER N), bold sans title. The main line.
  • Flashback (Tier 1) — gold-ruled inset block, eyebrow MEMORY · <date>; present tense (Janus's / Ana's memory). .flashback.
  • Interlude (Tier 2) — own divider page, teal eyebrow INTERLUDE, italic serif title; past-tense close-third (other POV, converging cast). .interludehead.
  • Counterpoint (Tier 3) — own divider page, slate eyebrow THE INNER WORLDS, roman (non-italic) title; past tense, cold (institution, non-converging). .counterpointhead.

Status

  • Built: Omnibus with all three tiers — books/faction-4--book-1--echoes-in-the-cold--omnibus.{md,html,pdf,epub}.
  • Open: Passage — the voyage-out chapter between Deeptown and Return (bible drafted, full prose to write, then rebuild); the Seren/Tessera near-miss paragraph (Tier 2 dramatic irony); optional Book Two seeds (Syndra/Lace → Mourne; one Dann Lev line).

Two scopes (this outline = Scope A)

  • A. Omnibus / Reader's Edition (built): seven Janus chapters untouched; flashbacks at triggers + parallel scenes as interludes + Mourne counterpoints. Additive, reversible.
  • B. Fully braided novel (later): mid-chapter cutaways that interleave threads more aggressively; rewrites authored Echos/Drift/Anchor prose. Reserved for a later pass.
