Flashback F1 — Arrival¶
Surfaces in: Echos in the Cold, early — triggered by the 520nm emergency lighting. Standard Date: 2846. Twelve months before the incident.
The Station¶
Hephaistos-9 is not welcoming. Nothing in the outer Veridion ring is welcoming — the Flicker has been working at the infrastructure for long enough that everything looks like it is one variance away from a fault code. The docking approach takes forty minutes longer than scheduled because the secondary guidance array has been running on a manual override for eleven weeks and the crew stopped filing incident reports about it somewhere around week four.
Janus sits in the transport bay and watches the station come into visual range through the porthole. It is the shape of all Praxis Biomechanica deep-orbit installations — interlocking hexagonal modules, the larger research sections at the centre, maintenance rings extending outward like the arms of something that has stopped bothering to look organic. It is rotating slowly. Everything on a station this size rotates — the alternative is the specific misery of long-term zero-g habitation, which produces effects on the human body that no one has found a way to make sound acceptable.
He does not look at it long. He has seen stations. He opens his kit case and runs through the inventory out of habit — the way you check things not because you expect them to be wrong but because the checking itself is useful information about your own state of attention.
Two items are not standard Praxis Biomechanica maintenance issue. He notes this to himself the way he notes everything: briefly, accurately, and then filed in the drawer where it lives.
The transport bay smells like recycled air and the specific metallic undertone of a life-support system that is doing its job but not enjoying it. Janus finds this comfortable. He has lived in filtered air for most of his adult life. The smell of unfiltered open space, when he occasionally encounters it, is the thing that makes him feel briefly foreign to himself.
The guidance system announces final approach. He closes the kit case.
The Kit Case¶
The first item is a Sensar MST-4 multitool.
Palm-length. Matte-black titanium alloy. The grip is worn where the thumb rests — worn by a previous owner, not by Janus, who bought it secondhand at a Rust Alliance salvage market in 2844 for sixty-three credits. He did not ask where it came from. The previous owner had clearly used it a great deal, and the wear pattern of heavy use on a well-made tool tells you more about its quality than a clean surface would.
It unfolds in sections: cutting blade, micro-torque driver with eight interchangeable heads stored in the spine, wire stripper, circuit probe, magnetised pick, ceramic scoring tool, pressure-seal punch, and two functions he has never formally identified. The unidentified heads came with the tool — retrofitted by the previous owner from another tool family, based on the slightly different finish of the attachment points. They work. He has used both of them, once each, in situations where nothing else he was carrying would have done the job, and both times they worked, which is the only qualification that has ever mattered to him in a piece of equipment.
He bought it the week after he left the Vanguard Corps. He does not examine this decision.
The second item is an Apex TAP-7 interface slate. Flat. Hand-sized. Eight millimetres thick. Matte-grey composite casing worn at the corners. An e-ink screen — minimal power draw, readable in emergency lighting, no glow signature in a tactical environment. A hardwire port on the lower edge for a collapsible cable that interfaces with any Apex, Praxis, or Guild standard data terminal. A second port labelled in Vanguard Corps technical notation that he has never translated for anyone who asked.
It is technically decommissioned Vanguard Corps field equipment. Technically not his to keep. He kept it because the decommissioning process involved surrendering hardware to a quartermaster he did not trust with a network intrusion device of any description, and so he signed the form and put the TAP-7 in his kit case and walked out of Vantage Station and has not been back.
The intrusion suite is four years out of date. He has patched it manually five times since. If anyone asks, it is a diagnostic tool. This is not entirely wrong.
He runs the inventory check. Both items are present. He closes the kit case. The transport docks with a clank that is slightly harder than it should be, which he notes and files.
The Laboratory Corridor, Research Level Three¶
The research sections are not Janus's domain. He is in Research Level Three because a floor panel on Lab 3-C has a compromised seal that has been pending in the maintenance queue for eleven days — filed under the wrong priority category, registering as a routine note rather than an environmental control fault.
He found it because he reads the full queue. He reads the full queue because he learned, in the Corps, that the items that kill you are usually the ones nobody thought were important enough to escalate.
The laboratory is occupied.
A junior researcher is in the middle of calibrating a probe telemetry array. She is young — younger than him by several years — with the particular posture of someone who has been hunched over a workbench long enough that standing upright requires a conscious effort. The probe array occupies more floor space than he anticipated. The seal fault is in the section directly beneath it.
"I need to access the floor panel under your station," he says.
She looks up. She has the expression of someone recalculating her schedule.
"I'm in the middle of a calibration sequence," she says. "It takes four hours. I can't interrupt it."
"The seal fault will compromise your floor heating. When the floor heating drops below threshold, the condensation cycle will fall outside the tolerance range for the calibration you're running. You'll lose the four hours anyway."
A pause. She looks at the floor panel. She looks back at him with the expression of someone doing a rapid and unwilling cost-benefit analysis.
"Fine," she says. "But carefully."
He is careful. He moves with the economic precision of someone who has spent a career in tight spaces with expensive equipment — no sudden motions, no unnecessary contact, each action explained before it happens. He tells her before he moves the array's support leg. She acknowledges with a nod that communicates she has technically registered the information.
He moves the leg. He accesses the panel. He begins the seal repair.
The array, deprived of one support leg, develops a resonance frequency. This happens slowly — not immediately, not suddenly. The resonance builds over approximately forty seconds while he is focused on the fitting. He does not detect it until he hears a specific harmonic from the mounting frame — a frequency he recognises from other equipment of this type — and by the time he has assessed it, the calibration sequence has already reached its most sensitive interval.
The sequence logs a fault. It terminates.
She stares at the screen for four seconds.
Then she turns to face him. Her voice stays at a controlled volume. This makes it worse.
"That," she says, "was four hours."
"Four hours and twelve minutes," Janus says, reading the session timestamp. "I'm sorry. I should have anticipated the resonance at this array configuration. I didn't. That's my fault."
The admission surprises her. He can see her recalibrating for deflection that did not come.
"Just fix the floor," she says.
He fixes the floor. She resets the array configuration. She does not look at him while he is working, but the quality of her not-looking has changed.
"Ana Hamato," she says, when he is closing the kit case.
"Janus," he says.
"Just Janus?"
"Just Janus."
She looks at him for a moment with an expression that does not resolve into anything he can read clearly, then returns to her workstation.
He leaves. He files the damage report immediately, noting it as his fault and the precise time lost. He does not examine why he remembers the exact figure.
Flashback F2 — The Canteen¶
Surfaces in: Echos in the Cold, mid-game — triggered when Janus picks up the data module. Standard Date: 2846–2847. The months before departure.
The Seating Arrangement¶
The station has forty-three regular occupants, six tables in the Level Two canteen, and no formal regulation of lunchtime scheduling.
Over the course of approximately three weeks, the occupants develop a seating arrangement that is never discussed, never written down, and observed by everyone with the solemnity reserved for social conventions that have no rational basis and therefore cannot be argued with. It persists precisely because naming it would require someone to defend it.
Janus arrives at the canteen six weeks into his contract and sits at the wrong table. He was not briefed on the arrangement. There are no signs.
He becomes aware he has made an error approximately three seconds after sitting down, when he reads the quality of the silence from the three people already at the table.
Ana Hamato is the fourth person at the table. She looks up, registers who he is, and produces an expression that requires no translation.
She does not move. He does not move.
They eat in silence for six minutes. The silence is not comfortable, but it is not hostile. It has the quality of two people who have each decided that the most dignified option is to wait it out.
"Probe telemetry," Janus says. Not a question.
"Yes," she says.
"Is the array recalibrated?"
"It recalibrated fine."
"Good."
Another silence. The first was avoidance. This one is two people who have run out of reasons not to have a conversation.
"Ana Hamato," she says.
"I know. I filed the damage report to your name. I'm Janus."
"I know. It was on the report."
"Right."
The silence that follows is the shortest one yet.
What They Are, After That¶
Not friends. The station is too small and too functional for the self-indulgence of close friendship. They are something more durable: familiar.
They share the table when their schedules align, which happens with increasing regularity. She talks about her work in the way someone talks about a thing that is both important to them and widely considered unimportant: carefully, in short doses, with the slight defensive quality of someone who has been interrupted one too many times by colleagues pivoting to their own more prestigious projects. The probe telemetry is not glamorous. She has been doing it for two years and she is good at it, which is not the same as finding it interesting, but is the thing she has in its place.
Janus listens. He is better at listening than at most other social activities. He does not perform interest he does not have. He asks questions about the methodology because he is genuinely curious about how systems work, which is the closest thing he has to a social grace.
She notices the difference. He can see her noticing it — a slight adjustment in how she frames what she says, less defensive, less abbreviated.
"The probe array covers the ice planet's magnetosphere in about forty passes per rotation," she says one afternoon. "The senior team's model says the signal is distributed evenly. It isn't. There are variance bands. Not big ones. But consistent."
"Consistent how," Janus says.
"Same frequency range. Same intervals. Every forty-two passes for fourteen months." She looks at her tray. "I've flagged it. It's in the pending queue."
Janus does not say anything. He has read the duty roster and he knows the size of the pending queue. He runs the calculation quietly and does not share the result.
"If you want, I can mention it in passing. I do maintenance on the research section life support — I see Gebreysius sometimes."
She considers. Then: "No. It's fine. It can wait."
He nods. He eats. He thinks about the variance bands on the drive back to the maintenance section.
Over the following months they establish a rhythm that neither of them names. She talks about the probe data in increasingly specific terms that suggest she has stopped editing for his expertise. He follows.
He tells her once, after she describes a discrepancy she cannot explain, that the things that should be noise but aren't are usually the things worth paying attention to.
She looks at him with the expression that means she is reassessing a category.
They do not become close. They become the thing that is more durable than close: familiar. They know each other in the way of people who have shared the same space long enough to learn each other's silences, and the knowing requires no maintenance to persist.
This is, he will think later — in an ejection capsule losing oxygen in the dark — the specific kind of thing you do not know you have until you are somewhere without it.
Flashback F3 — The Discovery¶
Surfaces in: Drift, early — Janus alone in the capsule, the data module pulsing amber. Standard Date: 2847. Approximately eight weeks before departure.
What the Probes Were Measuring¶
The probe array at Hephaistos-9 covers a hemisphere of the ice planet's magnetosphere in approximately forty passes per station rotation.
Ana has been archiving its output for fourteen months. This is the kind of work that produces a specific type of expertise — not the expertise of someone who has read the literature, but the expertise of someone who has lived inside a dataset long enough to know it the way you know a face. She knows what the Flicker signal should look like on a normal pass. She knows the variance patterns of the array's own hardware — which sensors drift under temperature change, which ones require the mental footnote of subtract three percent.
She knows this dataset better than anyone on the station.
On the night she finds it, she is running a routine archival check. She has done this check four hundred and seven times.
The readings look wrong.
Not corrupted — she checks immediately. Equipment failure is always the first hypothesis. She runs the hardware diagnostic. Everything is nominal. She runs it again. Still nominal.
The wrongness is in a frequency band the senior team classified as instrumental noise. The exclusion is in the project methodology documentation, made eighteen months ago, before Ana joined the project — one of those decisions that becomes invisible once it is made.
Ana's mental baseline is fourteen months more detailed than the one the senior team used when they made that decision.
She looks at the pattern that should not be there. She runs the archival data back through the previous fourteen months.
The pattern is there. Every forty-two passes. Consistent as breathing.
She sits back in her chair.
She is going to need to run this three times, minimum, at three different calibrations, before she will let herself believe what she is looking at.
She starts the first re-analysis. It is going to be a long night.
Three Analyses¶
She runs the first analysis at standard calibration. Fourteen months of data. Filtered for the excluded frequency band only.
The pattern is there.
She runs the second analysis with the hardware bias corrections she has developed from fourteen months of watching the specific quirks of each sensor. She is removing everything that is the instrument rather than the sky.
The pattern is still there. Cleaner now.
She runs the third analysis with a completely separate calibration model — reconstructed from first principles, assuming nothing about what the instrument should be seeing. This takes the longest. It is past two in the morning when she finishes.
The pattern is still there.
She makes a list, in her head, of possible explanations. Writing them down would make them real before they are confirmed.
Explanation one: an instrument artefact she has not yet identified. Still the most likely.
Explanation two: a property of the Flicker that the senior team's model does not include. Possible. Models are approximations.
Explanation three: something the Flicker is responding to.
She holds explanation three for a moment and puts it aside. She does not have enough to work with yet.
She looks at the bearing.
The pattern has a direction. A distributed phenomenon like the Flicker's EM emission does not have a preferential direction — it disperses through the magnetosphere. A pattern with a consistent bearing means the pattern is not distributed. It is oriented.
She traces the bearing through the Veridion survey grid. The line passes through the system's outer regions, through the mid-system transit corridors, and terminates at a coordinate near the gravitational centre of the Veridion system.
She checks the survey database.
The coordinate is marked as empty space. A survey beacon was placed there approximately sixty years ago. Nothing registered since.
She looks at the coordinate for a long time.
Then she closes the analysis files and opens a new document and begins writing the steps of what she is going to do next.
What She Decides¶
She does not sleep that night.
By four in the morning she has a plan. She simply looks at the plan that involves flagging the anomaly through the review system, and she looks at what happens next in that plan, and she decides that what happens next is not acceptable.
What happens next: the flag reaches Gebreysius's queue, where it waits behind forty-six other pending items. Gebreysius reviews it in a month. He contacts the Praxis corporate liaison. The corporate structure above the liaison — the division whose name does not appear on the public registries — decides what to do with the information.
She archives the raw data to Archive Core 01. She encodes it with her personal key. She adds three layers of obfuscation to the data structure. She is building in enough friction that access requires deliberate effort rather than casual browsing.
She creates the flag in the worklog. Correctly formatted. Correctly timestamped. Data reference attached. She submits it to the pending queue.
She does not include the bearing.
She is afraid that if the archive is found, the bearing will tell whoever found it exactly where to look — and she does not know who will be doing the finding. The bearing is safer in her memory.
She rehearses it until she knows she will not forget. Four digits. A decimal. The gravitational centre of the Veridion system.
She thinks about telling Janus. She holds the thought. He is careful. He would not panic. But she does not know yet what she is going to need, and she does not want to hand him a problem until she knows the shape of it.
She closes the workstation. She goes to her bunk. She does not sleep.
She is working through the calculation of the bearing, over and over, until it is part of her in a way that does not require effort to sustain.
The Coordinate¶
The bearing does not include the dead ice planet.
This is the thing she keeps returning to. The ice planet is the source of the Flicker — the entire reason Hephaistos-9 exists in a gravitational shadow at the edge of the Veridion system. The Flicker's EM emission originates at the ice planet's magnetosphere and disperses outward.
But the pattern in the excluded frequency band is not coming from the ice planet. It is pointing away from it. Inward, toward the system's gravitational centre, toward a coordinate that contains nothing.
She has been thinking about this for three hours and she has arrived at one hypothesis that she is not prepared to state out loud yet, even in her own head.
The Flicker is not the source of the pattern. The Flicker is responding to something. Whatever produces the signal in the excluded frequency band is at the bearing, not at the ice planet. The ice planet's magnetosphere is the medium — the amplifier, the antenna, the relay. The origin is somewhere else.
She does not know what is at the coordinate. The survey database says nothing is there.
The survey database is sixty years old.
She rehearses the four-digit grid reference in her head. She will not write it down. Some information is safer in her memory than on any medium that can be searched.
She will carry it with her when she leaves.
She has already decided she is leaving.
Flashback F4 — Departure¶
Surfaces in: Drift, late — triggered by Kirk's question about whether anyone knows they are out there. Standard Date: 2847.205–208.
The Message¶
She writes the message in pieces over two days. Not because it is long — she has kept it to six lines on purpose — but because each piece of it has to carry exactly the right weight. Too much and she is telling him things that will become a liability if anyone reviews the message logs. Too little and she is handing him something he cannot use.
She knows how he reads. He attends to what is not said as much as what is. She is writing for that version of him.
The message reads:
I'm taking the next supply transport — personal circumstances, nothing to worry about. I wanted to say goodbye properly but I keep missing you in the canteen, so this will have to do.
There's a place behind the secondary coolant housing on Level Three where the access panel hasn't been opened since installation. I left something there. It's not important, which is exactly why no one will look for it.
If someone ever asks you about probe data from months twelve and fourteen of the Flicker archive, don't answer until you understand why they're asking.
If I don't contact you within thirty days of sending this, use your judgment about what to do with what you find.
I'm sorry I'm not better at goodbyes.
She reads it back three times. The first two lines are cover. The third is the location of the data module. The fourth and fifth are the instructions. The sixth is the only line that is unambiguously personal, and she has left it in because the message reads wrong without something that sounds like a person wrote it.
She sends it. She closes the interface. She starts packing.
The Access Panel¶
Janus reads the message twice and puts his tablet down and sits with it for the length of time it takes him to finish the ration pack he was eating.
Then he goes to Research Level Three.
It is 22:30 station time. The research section is mostly empty. The secondary coolant housing is in the corridor beyond Lab 3-C, behind a maintenance access panel that is, as she described, untouched. The seal around the panel edge has the specific quality of a seal that has never been broken — undisturbed, no tool marks, a thin deposit of the particular dust that accumulates in corners of stations that are kept functional but not frequently cleaned.
He opens it with the MST-4. The data module is there.
He picks it up. It is smaller than he expected — palm-sized, optical lattice, Praxis Biomechanica's long-term storage format. An amber indicator light pulses slowly at the edge, patient as a heartbeat. He holds it for a moment, turning it in his hand, reading the construction the way he reads any piece of equipment.
New. Or nearly new.
He puts it in the kit case in the pocket he uses for delicate components. He replaces the panel. He wipes the seal edge to remove any fingerprints. He goes back to the maintenance section.
He does not sleep well that night. He lies in his bunk and thinks about the message — specifically about if someone ever asks. Not 'if Praxis asks.' Not 'if the research team asks.' The category is deliberately broad. She does not know who might ask.
Use your judgment. She said she did not know exactly what the module contained. The exactly was doing a great deal of work in that sentence.
He files this in the drawer. The drawer is full.
The Docking Corridor¶
She does not say goodbye to anyone formally. She submits the transfer request four days before departure — personal circumstances, the HR notation that means don't ask.
She packs her personal items. They fill one bag. She leaves her workstation in the handover state. She does not leave anything on her desk that someone else would have to decide what to do with.
She is in the docking ring corridor, bag on her shoulder, ten minutes before the transport locks in, when she sees him.
Janus is coming from the maintenance section. He has his kit case. He stops.
They stand in the corridor with six metres between them. She walked this way because she knows where his morning route takes him. She will miss the transport if she is wrong.
She is not wrong.
"You're leaving," he says.
"The transport's at fourteen hundred," she says.
"Right," he says.
"Did you find it?" she says.
"Yes," he says.
She looks at him. She is reading him the way she reads him — not his face, which gives relatively little, but his posture, the quality of his attention. He has not slept well. She can see this.
"Don't let anyone scan it," she says. "Don't tell anyone you have it. If you don't hear from me in thirty days, assume I'm not coming back and use your judgment about what to do with it."
"What is it?" Janus says.
A pause.
"I don't know," Ana says. "Exactly."
This is technically true. The exactly is doing a great deal of work in that sentence. She is aware of this.
"Alright," Janus says.
He says it in the specific register of someone who has understood the limits of what they are being told and has decided those limits are acceptable for now.
She nods. She shifts the bag on her shoulder. She walks toward the docking ring.
She does not look back.
She boards the transport. She looks at the wall and thinks about the problem she has created and the problem she has partially solved and the large space between those two problems where everything else is going to happen.
Flashback F5 — The Chief Scientist¶
Surfaces in: Drift epilogue or Anchor prologue — when the Allianz figure mentions the research team. Standard Date: 2847.210. The morning before the incident.
Twenty-Two Years¶
Dr. Aram Gebreysius reviews his team's pending work queue on the first Monday of every month.
This is not a rule he was given. It is a habit he established in his second year of managing a research team, when a junior assistant's measurement correction sat unreviewed for six weeks and cost the project four months of recalibration. He had been occupied with the theoretical work, as senior researchers are. He had trusted the system to surface things that needed his attention.
He had been wrong about the system.
He has reviewed the queue on the first Monday of every month since. Not because he expects to find something each time — most months the queue contains routine items. He reviews it because the reviewing itself is the point: a practice of deliberate attention that exists as a counterweight to the institutional tendency to trust that important things will surface themselves.
He drinks his morning tea. The tea on Hephaistos-9 is reconstituted, not the blend he prefers on Caelindra, but consistent and adequate. He can work with consistent and adequate.
He opens the queue.
Ana Hamato's Flag¶
He reaches Ana Hamato's pending items near the bottom of the queue.
She departed on the supply transport two days ago. Her items are filtered to the bottom of the review priority list — correct procedure.
He opens her pending flags.
There are forty-seven of them, spanning fourteen months. She has been flagging consistently, as the protocol requires.
None of them have been reviewed.
He checks the review log. Not a single one, across fourteen months of flagging, has been reviewed by anyone on the senior team.
He makes a note to address the queue management protocol. This is a process failure. He will address it.
He opens the most recent flag. He reads the notation — standard anomaly report, probe telemetry, band classification: instrumental noise. He reads the attached data reference. He opens the data file.
He reads it for six minutes.
Then he checks Ana Hamato's transfer record. Departed. Supply Transport 7. 2847.208.
Two days ago.
He reads the data file again.
What He Recognises¶
He has spent thirty years learning to distinguish a genuine anomaly from an instrument error, a statistical artefact from a real signal. This is the core skill of his profession — reading a result and knowing, before the analysis is complete, whether it is the kind of result that changes things.
He knows.
The bearing — the direction the pattern points, the coordinate it terminates at — he knows the coordinate. It is in the project survey database: empty space, survey marker, nothing registered.
He knows that this is not nothing.
He does not panic. He has procedures for this. He has used them twice before in his career.
He contacts his Praxis Biomechanica corporate liaison at 09:47. He explains, in precise language, that his team has identified a potentially significant anomaly in the archived probe telemetry data, with bearing implications requiring senior review. He requests to initiate the data security and research continuation protocol.
The response comes in under two minutes.
"We're sending a team to secure the research data and ensure continuity. Please maintain normal operations until they arrive."
"Of course," Gebreysius says. "I'll have the relevant archive sections flagged for their review."
He thanks the liaison. He ends the call. He returns to his queue.
He will not know, when the station begins to shut down, that the call he made this morning triggered it. He will not know that the number routes to a division whose name does not appear on any public registry.
He will have forty-seven minutes.
He uses them correctly.
The Note¶
He writes quickly. He confirms the authentication sequence — the two-person protocol Ana Hamato designed herself, that he found in her workstation documentation and approved silently, because he recognised it as better than the one the project manual specified.
He writes down the additional parameter — the one from the restricted supplemental archive, classified above Ana's clearance. He knows her analysis was missing this piece. He writes it in plain notation, no encryption, because the note needs to be readable.
He writes three sentences of context. Not more. The person reading this will either understand or they will not.
He folds the note. He tapes it to the underside of his desk. He attaches his keycard above it, separately taped, with one word written in his precise hand next to the card:
Go.
Then he sits back in his chair. He puts his hands on the desk, flat, in the posture he adopts when he is thinking.
He thinks about the forty-seven pending flags in the queue.
He thinks about Ana Hamato, who filed them all, and who left before he reviewed them. She filed the flag through the standard protocol — a visible record, a marker that someone looked, a thing that cannot be unfiled.
He thinks she is smarter than he has given her credit for.
He sits with this thought until the station begins to shut down.
When the lights go red, he does not move from his chair. There is nowhere to go that would matter. He is a careful man who has done his job correctly, and it has led here, and he is going to stay in his chair and be a careful man until the end of it.
The note is under the desk.
He hopes it is enough.
Flashback F6 — The Bearing¶
Surfaces in: Return — triggered when Ana accesses the probe telemetry relay in the compute room.
What She Did Not Write Down¶
Ana did not include the bearing in Archive Core 01.
The bearing is the most important single piece of information she found. Without it, the archived data is an interesting anomaly in a frequency band that no one was looking at. With it, it is a specific location in the Veridion system where something is happening or will happen.
She was afraid that if the archive was found, the bearing would tell whoever found it exactly where to look — and she did not know who would be doing the finding.
So she kept it in her head.
She rehearsed it on the supply transport, watching the station disappear behind them through the porthole. Four digits and a decimal. The Veridion standard survey grid reference for the gravitational centre of the system, approximately 0.3 AU from the primary.
She rehearsed it every day after that — not deliberately, just moving through it the way you move through the names of people who matter, running it like a loop that does not require effort to sustain.
She had been carrying it for fourteen months by the time the transport left the station. She had not acted on it because she did not have enough data, and she had not had enough data because the supplemental series was classified above her clearance.
She was supposed to be invisible long enough to understand what she had found.
She ran out of time.
The Compute Room¶
When Ana accesses the probe telemetry relay in the compute room of Hephaistos-9, the screen shows her fourteen months of live data.
The relay has been running in an empty station, in a powered circuit the kill team did not know to wipe, logging the sky with the patient indifference of a system doing what it was designed to do.
She looks at the bearing on the screen.
It is the same coordinate.
She has been carrying it in her head for so long that seeing it rendered externally — on a screen in the station where she found it — produces a specific sensation she does not have a word for. Something between recognition and verification. The difference between having been right in private and having it confirmed in an empty room in the dark.
She adds Gebreysius's parameter to the archived dataset. The calculation takes four minutes.
The screen updates.
The bearing is not empty anymore.
She looks at the display for a long time without speaking. Janus is watching the door. He turns around when she does not say anything, and he looks at the screen, and he looks at her.
She has been right about the bearing for longer than she knew.
The parameter Gebreysius had and she did not — the supplemental series from the restricted archive — completes the picture she was working from. She was missing the piece that resolves the timing: not just the bearing, not just the presence of something at the coordinate, but the trajectory. The approach. The rate.
The Hephaistos-9 telemetry archive, fully processed, does not just show something forming at the gravitational centre. It shows something that has been forming there for longer than the probe telemetry began logging — something already in progress before the first observation, caught in the middle, like arriving late to a film and seeing enough of the plot to understand the structure.
She thinks about the ice planet.
She thinks about the Flicker's signal, which originates at the ice planet, which has been broadcasting for at least as long as the project's observation period goes back. She thinks about the excluded frequency band. She thinks about the pattern she found, the direction it pointed.
The Flicker is not the source. The ice planet is not the source.
The ice planet has been watching something approach.
The Flicker is what you do when you have been watching something approach for a very long time and you are trying to tell someone.
What She Says¶
Janus is still looking at the screen. He is waiting for her.
"It's been there for longer than we've been watching," she says. "The archive caught the middle of it. We don't know when it started."
"But we know the direction it came from," Janus says.
"Yes." A pause. "And we know what was watching it."
He looks at her.
"The ice planet," he says. Not a question.
"The Flicker signal," she says. "The frequency band the senior team excluded. It wasn't noise. The ice planet was broadcasting. Has been broadcasting. It was pointing at that coordinate. The whole time."
Janus is quiet for a moment. He looks at the screen, at the formation at the gravitational centre — the thing the live relay has been logging in an empty room, growing on a non-linear curve while no one was watching.
"How long have you known the bearing?" he says.
"I identified it fourteen months ago," she says. "I archived it. I didn't write it down anywhere else." A pause. "I kept it."
He looks at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?" he says.
She considers this. It is a fair question.
"Because I didn't know what I was handing you," she says. "I knew the bearing. I knew the signal wasn't noise. I didn't know —" she looks at the screen — "I didn't know it was this."
He holds that.
"You couldn't have known," he says.
"No," she agrees. "But I could have told you there was a bearing."
"Yes," he says. "You could have."
He does not say this to wound her. He says it because it is true and because he handles true things as facts rather than as weapons. She has known this about him for a long time. She is still grateful for it.
"What do we do?" she says.
He looks at the relay. He looks at the signal the ice planet has been broadcasting, pointing at a gravitational centre that no longer contains nothing.
"We transmit," he says. "On the frequency you found. The one it was using. We tell it we read it — we found the bearing, we processed the data. If there's something there, if the ice planet was pointing at something that can receive a signal, we tell it we received the warning."
"We don't know what we'll get back," she says.
"No," Janus says.
She thinks about the thirty days she gave him. She thinks about the ejection capsule and the oxygen and the mathematics of having been right about something for longer than anyone was watching. She thinks about the ice planet, patient in its gravitational shadow, broadcasting at the empty system for years.
"Alright," she says.
She sits at the relay terminal. She begins to work.
