Premise

Janus goes to the most dangerous place he has been: the heart of the institution that sent the kill team. Ana is not there. She was warned and ran. But she left a note for the person who warned her, and that person is still here, and she knows things that change every calculation Janus has been running.

Also: he finds the nanotracker.

Setting

Caelindra Prime — the Guild's capital city. Inner-world architecture: towers with integrated transit, everything connected, everything logged, neural implant infrastructure woven into the building management systems. The Tessera is the Guild's administrative core — Pure-tier principals, External Affairs, the Auric, the Infrastructure Licensing Committee.

Janus does not belong here. His body knows this. His body language was calibrated for industrial environments and has not recalibrated for spaces where every movement is read. He is wearing a maintenance technician's work gear in a district where the lowest visible social tier is Graft-tier administrative. He is carrying a data module worth a kill team.

He goes anyway.

The outer Tessera fringe — where the administrative towers transition to the outer-city commerce district — is the zone where he can operate without triggering immediate Guild security attention. Building Seven in the commerce district: this is the address Ana left.

Prologue — The Wrong City (5–7 pages)

Page 1 — Arrival

The transit from Meridian Hub to Caelindra Prime's outer spaceport takes eighteen hours. Janus does not use this time efficiently. He uses it correctly — running the full picture of what he knows and what he does not, calibrating which of the two categories his current heading falls into.

Category one (knows): Ana was at Building Seven. She received a warning and left. The warning had Pure-tier Guild authentication. Someone in the upper tiers knows she was here and chose to warn rather than act.

Category two (does not know): who sent the warning. Why warning rather than action. Whether the person who sent it is an asset or a threat in a configuration he has not yet seen.

He lands and moves through the spaceport with the specific economy of motion he adopted in the Corps for environments where appearing to belong is more important than being comfortable.

He does not appear to belong. He appears to have a reason to be here. These are different things. For most people in this district, the difference does not register. For people trained to read it, it does.

He notes this and moves faster.

Page 2 — Building Seven

An outer-city commercial building. Guild administrative standard construction — Praxis-supplied, which means Janus knows its layout from maintenance protocols he has memorised the way he memorises all institutional infrastructure: not because he expects to need it, but because knowledge of how a building works is always more useful than knowledge of who is in it.

The official entrance requires a registered Guild ID for the upper floors. He does not have one.

The maintenance entrance requires a service credential and a manual override on a panel whose format he recognises from a Praxis facilities briefing document he read in a waiting room in 2845.

He is inside in four minutes.

Page 3 — The Archivist

The archivist contact Ana used is on the third floor. His name is not stated in canon. His function is: mid-level records specialist in External Affairs, has worked here for twelve years, owes Ana a favour from a data transaction three years ago.

He is visibly frightened. Not of Janus specifically — Janus is not presenting threat, he is presenting reason — but of what having admitted anything means. He is a man who has spent twelve years keeping his head below the administrative sightline and is now three days into understanding that Ana brought her trouble into his office and some of it stayed.

Under the specific kind of patient pressure Janus learned in the Corps — not aggression, not threat, just the weight of someone who has all the time in the world and a very good memory — he confirms:

  • Ana was here for three days running a secondary analysis
  • She received a message on the third day and left within the hour
  • The message had a cipher signature he recognised from the building's internal communication architecture: External Affairs, Pure-tier, and a specific originator signature he knows but does not want to name

Janus names it. The archivist confirms it. Syndra Vael.

PLACEHOLDER — this is a major scene that needs full prose writing

Navigating through the Tessera fringe on the TAP-7's Fabric guidance layer, the instrument produces an anomaly reading. Janus notices it the way he notices all instrument anomalies: as information, not noise.

He traces it. He stops in a corridor. He is a maintenance technician with a professional relationship to the concept of things that should not be there. He runs the diagnostic twice.

0.4 millimetres. Base of his neck. Slightly left of centre.

He does the arithmetic. Not the arithmetic of what it is — he knows what it is. The arithmetic of since when. Since the hangar. Every dead-drop address. Every Fabric node query. Every building entry. The android in the Warrens — not following a hardware signature, following him. Because the tracker is powered by body heat and activates on any network-connected terminal, which means every action he has taken since the capsule has been logged and transmitted.

He stands in a Caelindra Prime corridor for four minutes.

In those four minutes he runs the full geometry of the past three months. Ana's chain. The megacity. The Hub. The archivist. Every contact burned. Every dead-drop address burned. The people who are watching him follow the chain and waiting for him to reach the end of it.

Why haven't they acted?

The answer is the worst part: they want to see what she does when he arrives. They want the two of them together, with whatever she has been building, so they can take it all at once.

He removes the tracker. He crushes it.

He changes his approach entirely.

He is going to find Syndra Vael.

Interactive Section — The Most Dangerous Meeting

Overview

The Tessera's interactive section is the most socially demanding of Book One. There are no rooms to search, no terminals to jack into. The core mechanic is navigation under observation — Janus moving through a space where being visible is dangerous and being invisible is not possible, toward a meeting with the most powerful person he has ever been in a room with, and managing what that meeting costs.

The score system rewards preparation before the meeting and precision during it. The player who enters Syndra's office with the most information will get the most out of the meeting. The player who enters with nothing will still get something — Syndra is not going to let a visitor leave without an implicit transaction completed — but the exchange will be less favourable.

Rooms

The Commerce District — Street Level

The outer Tessera fringe. Foot traffic: administrative workers, delivery operations, outer-district commercial activity. Auric Wardens visible at the larger junction points — not searching, patrolling. Their presence is a statement, not an active threat. Yet.

Available actions:

  • EXAMINE PEDESTRIANS — the specific demographic texture of inner-world Guild space. Implant luminescence at the Graft tier and above, visible as faint subdermal light. Janus is unmodified. In this district, unmodified people exist, but they have reasons for being here that are visible in their function.
  • EXAMINE AURIC PRESENCE — Wardens at two junction points. Standard patrol pattern. Not responding to anything specific. The patrol rhythm gives Janus a window between passes.
  • FIND MAINTENANCE ACCESS — BUILDING FOUR — Syndra's building. Not the official entrance. The maintenance access is on the east side, below street level. Praxis-format construction, same as Building Seven. Score: +1.

Score milestones available: 1

Building Four — Maintenance Infrastructure

Below street level. The building's mechanical and service infrastructure. Pressurised, climate-controlled, empty of people — maintenance on this building is scheduled twice weekly, and today is not a scheduled day.

Available actions:

  • MAP BUILDING LAYOUT — the TAP-7 can read Praxis-format building management protocols from a hardwired maintenance junction. This gives Janus the floor plan, the security node locations, and the service lift positions. Score: +1.
  • IDENTIFY SYNDRA VAEL'S OFFICE — cross-referencing the building management data with the External Affairs directory cipher the archivist confirmed (cipher signature → specific node → office location). She is on the seventh floor, corner office, north face. No windows. Score: +1.
  • ACCESS SERVICE LIFT — takes Janus to the seventh floor via the maintenance infrastructure. No access log — maintenance lifts route through a separate system.

Score milestones available: 2

Syndra Vael's Office — Seventh Floor

She is reading when he arrives. She does not look up immediately.

He sat across from her without being invited. She sets the document down after a moment.

She is not surprised. This is the thing that tells him the most.

Available actions:

This room is not a puzzle. It is a negotiation.

The player inputs what Janus says. The output is calibrated to what Janus has established before this meeting:

  • If the player mapped the building and identified her office: Syndra notes that he found her via the maintenance infrastructure. She respects the methodology. The negotiation opens from a position of technical mutual regard.

  • If the player also bought Cassia Ore's Hub intelligence: Janus can reference the contractor chain cipher without explaining how he found it. This matters: Syndra asks, once, how he located her. If he can answer without exposing his full information chain, she adjusts her assessment of him upward. She was expecting someone who followed Ana's trail by direct route. He did not.

The negotiation itself is not scored mechanically — but the information Janus carries into it determines what he walks out with.

What Syndra will tell him regardless: - The kill team was sanctioned by Orvyn Lace through a channel above the standard Guild security apparatus - Ana left a note - She believes the module and the Azimuth are connected. She cannot prove this yet. She is correct.

What Syndra will tell him only if he gives her Ana's destination: - The full contents of Ana's note - A Fabric authentication layer that will mask his movement from the android he is now aware of (she knows about the tracker; she has not said she knows; she sees him crush something in his hand before he sat down) - A route to Ana through External Affairs network — not the dead-drop chain, which is burned; a direct vector

What Syndra keeps regardless: - Everything she knows about Whisper's operational history (she will never give this to a proxy she does not control) - The full intelligence picture on Lace — she gives Janus the name, not the file. The name is enough to work with.

Score: +1 for entering the meeting. +1 for leaving with the authentication layer and the route.

Score milestones available: 2

Score System

Action Score
Access Building Four via maintenance entrance +1
Map building layout via TAP-7 +1
Identify Syndra's office via building management cross-reference +1
Enter the meeting +1
Leave with authentication layer and route to Ana +1
Maximum 5

Failure Conditions

  • Attempting official entrance to Building Four: triggers building security. The Auric patrol responds within three minutes. Janus can evade but the interaction costs time and flags his presence in the district.
  • Meeting Syndra without prior preparation: the negotiation still occurs but Janus enters with no leverage. Syndra gives him Ana's note contents but not the authentication layer and not the precise route. He leaves with less. The Tessera installment can still complete — it just costs more in subsequent installments.
  • Mentioning the nanotracker to Syndra before she indicates she knows: she adjusts the negotiation. She was watching to see if he would surface it. He surfaced it. She decides he is more straightforward than she expected and adjusts the transaction accordingly (in his favour — she prefers directness to calculation in people she is going to use as proxies).

Parallel Layer — The Seren Near-Miss

PLACEHOLDER — structural beat, no full scene yet

Seren Vael is in Caelindra Prime's Underlay for two days. He is using House of Weights-adjacent contacts for implant information. The same network that Syndra arranged for Janus's departure transit. The same building. He left one hour before Janus passes through the same address.

The transit contact mentions, in passing, that a young inner-world man was through here an hour ago — moving carefully, clearly not comfortable in the Underlay but managing. Heading for the outer transit corridors.

Janus files it. The reader, following Seren's arc, knows.

They were in the same building. One hour apart. Neither knows.

Parallel Layer — Mirai

Colonel Mirai tracked Janus to Caelindra Prime through the outer fringe transit hub — the one registered manifest he used before Syndra's network masked his movement. She arrived two hours after he did.

She cannot enter the Tessera administrative district. Vanguard enforcement credentials flag in Guild administrative territory and she knows this. She is waiting at the outer fringe transit hub.

She is very good at waiting.

She misses him by forty minutes. He left through the maintenance access. She has no record of his Tessera entry because there is no record of his Tessera entry.

She sends the four-word message to his TAP-7 device signature.

Not now. She saves it for Deeptown.

Intermissions

Trigger Content
nanotracker found The four minutes in the corridor. The full geometry of the past three months running in Janus's head. Not panic — inventory. You remove it. You crush it. You stand there for four minutes and you do not move and you run every contact since the hangar.
Ana's note contents Syndra reads it aloud, or Janus reads it himself — I know what the bearing means. I need the parameter to complete the model. There is only one place it exists and I am not ready to go there yet. The module pulses once in his pocket.
Orvyn Lace — named A name. A Pure-tier position with no public title. The man who sanctioned the kill team through a channel above the standard apparatus. You file it next to the cipher designation from the Hub. The drawer is nearly full.

Epilogue — Moving Again

Janus leaves Caelindra Prime through the route Syndra arranged: a transit connection through the lower Underlay that does not pass through any Guild-logged checkpoint. No transit record. No arrival note. He disappears from the inner worlds as completely as Ana disappeared from the outer ring three months ago.

He has: the data module, the authentication layer, Ana's note contents, Lace's name, a route to Korrath IV, and forty minutes on Mirai.

He is three days from Deeptown.

Ana has been there nine days. She is running the secondary analysis for the fourth time. It keeps failing to produce a definitive result.

He does not know this yet. He knows she is not moving anymore. He knows what that means about the secondary analysis and why.

Writer's Note — Syndra

Syndra Vael does not raise her voice. She does not threaten. She makes accurate observations about consequences and allows the listener to understand them.

The meeting with Janus is the first time Syndra has been in a room with someone who approached through the maintenance access. She notes this and does not show that she notes it. He is the proxy she cannot officially send — already moving toward Ana for reasons of his own, already carrying the thing she has been trying to account for.

She will not thank him. She will give him what he needs and make the transaction precise enough that both parties understand what it was. She will not pretend the transaction is something else.

Janus will respect this. He will also not trust it. These are compatible responses in this situation.

The moment the meeting ends and he leaves via the maintenance lift: she returns to her document. She picks up where she was. There is a great deal of work still to do.
