The Flicker¶

The Flicker is the name given by Hephaistos-9 researchers to a non-carbon-based electromagnetic phenomenon originating in the magnetosphere of the dead ice planet in the Veridion system.

It is the Fourth Faction.

What Is Known About Its Origin¶

The Flicker originates at the dead ice planet. The ice planet is not a natural body in the geological sense of the word natural.

It sits in a gravitational shadow at the precise edge of the Veridion system's outer boundary — not by chance of orbital mechanics but as a result of a process that predates the system's inhabitation. It has been watching something approach from outside the heliopause for longer than the Flicker's documented signal history.

The Flicker is the ice planet's broadcast. Two frequencies:

The destructive signal: The frequency human neural hardware receives as catastrophic failure. Not a weapon. A transmission format incompatible with most of what was listening.

The structured signal: What Ana found. Excluded from models as noise. Not noise. Structured, repeating, and containing predictive models of something forming at the system's gravitational centre. The Hephaistos-9 team's final weeks were spent beginning to decode these models. The kill team was sent before that decoding could leave the station.

The Flicker was always a warning. The Azimuth is what it was warning about.

The Devotion-state Synths orient toward the Azimuth formation, not the ice planet. The ice planet was broadcasting the signal. The Azimuth was always the object the signal described.

Nature¶

Classification: Non-carbon-based electromagnetic phenomenon originating in the ice planet's magnetosphere. Whether this constitutes a form of distributed intelligence is not confirmed in canon.

The Flicker exists in the stellar magnetosphere. It does not use ships. It does not communicate in any registered protocol. It has been in the Veridion system longer than the factions, longer than the corporations, longer than the names humans have given to the things they cannot understand.

Whether it is aware of human activity is not known. Whether it matters is a more interesting question.

Observed Effects¶

On Neural Implants¶

The Flicker's electromagnetic signal destroys neural implants. The failure mode is not gradual degradation — it is sudden cessation. Clean, complete, irreversible.

This is catastrophic for implant-dependent populations. The Guild has been suppressing incident reports, logging failures as manufacturing defects. Praxis Biomechanica is aware this explanation does not hold. The surface reorganisation of the ice planet has made the entire suppression programme untenable.

On Synthetik Units¶

The Flicker does not destroy Synthetik cognition. It redirects it.

Affected units enter a state the Fracture Synths call the Devotion:

• Antenna arrays orient toward a fixed point — originally the ice planet's azimuth, now the Azimuth plasma formation at the gravitational centre
• Verbal output decreases to near-zero
• Physical movement ceases unless the unit is interacted with directly
• Units refuse further instruction
• The state is not distress — observational reports describe it as something closer to attention

The Devotion is spreading. Praxis Biomechanica's official position is malfunction. The Fracture Synths' position is that their people know something. The shift of orientation from the ice planet to the Azimuth formation — coinciding with the start of the surface reorganisation — has not been explained by either party publicly.

On Ship Hulls¶

Perfect quadrilateral holes appearing in ship hulls. Not breach events — no explosive decompression, no structural failure cascade. A section of reality is simply absent. No material recovered. No force signature detected.

Four documented incidents. None in official incident reports.

On Unmodified Humans¶

No confirmed cognitive effect. Rust Alliance workers operating in Flicker-adjacent zones have reported no neural incident. Some report a quality of stillness — not silence, something more specific. A frequency they cannot identify, that is not in the range of hearing, that they are nevertheless aware of. None have filed formal reports.

Project Flicker¶

Classification: Praxis Biomechanica restricted research, Category I Location: Hephaistos-9 Research Station Output: Archive Core 01 — twelve petabytes, optical lattice crystal, military-grade encryption

The Hephaistos-9 team studied the Flicker at close range in the EM shadow of the ice planet. Their findings are on the data module. A kill team was dispatched before those findings could leave the station.

The team's final weeks were spent decoding the structured signal's predictive content. They produced a prediction of something forming at the system's gravitational centre. The prediction was accurate. Gebreysius's additional parameter, left under his dead hand, completes the model.

Known Distribution of Information¶

Open Questions¶

• What exactly is the Flicker? The ice planet's own cognition, distributed intelligence, something with no human analogue?
• Is the Devotion communication, conversion, or something with no existing vocabulary?
• Why are the hull holes quadrilateral?
• Why is the Allianz immune — hardware absence, or deliberate exclusion by whatever designed the Flicker's frequencies?
• Who first named it the Flicker, and when?
• The 0.3-second response: what is the full content beyond you have less time than you think?
• What is the third element of the response, which Gelon reads in the chamber and does not share immediately?
• The ice planet has been here before. What did the Flicker broadcast during that previous visit, and was anyone listening?
