The Guild does not have an army. It has the Auric. The distinction is administrative.
Overview¶
The Synapse-Guild has never formally declared war on anything. It does not need to. What it has instead is the Auric — a standing enforcement division that protects Guild interests, executes Guild decisions, and manages the category of problems that cannot be resolved through administrative process or financial pressure.
They are not mercenaries. They are Guild. Their chain of command ends at the Pure tier. Their mandate is not public order — that is Vanguard's registered function. Their mandate is Guild security, which is a broader and more flexible category than it sounds.
They are smaller than Vanguard Orbital's military apparatus. They are also more precisely deployed, better resourced per operative, and operating without the constraints that come from Vanguard's growing interest in being seen as a legitimate sovereign power. The Auric does not need to be seen as legitimate. It needs to be effective.
The name comes from an ancient administrative term for the Guild's treasury protection force, reorganised six times over three centuries into its current form. What remained constant across every reorganisation was the relationship to the Pure tier: the Auric serves the Guild's inner circle directly, not its visible administrative apparatus. Guild historians compare this to the Praetorian Guard of ancient Earth history, carefully, and only in internal documents.
Structure and Capability¶
Estimated strength: 800–1,200 active operatives system-wide, with a training and reserve cadre of similar size.
Implant augmentation: Auric operatives carry above-standard cognitive and physical enhancement — significantly above Vanguard standard issue. Reaction time, threat assessment, environmental processing: measurably above unaugmented human baseline in operationally relevant ways.
Intelligence integration: Direct access to Guild intelligence networks, including External Affairs when the mandate requires it. They know more about a target before deployment than any Vanguard patrol unit operating in comparable territory.
Institutional loyalty: Auric operatives are Guild-born or Guild-raised in almost all cases. They are not employees — they are members. A Vanguard soldier can change allegiances when contracts change. An Auric operative does not have a contract. They have a position in an institution that defines their identity. Defection is essentially unknown in the Auric's recorded history.
Ranks¶
| Designation | Function |
|---|---|
| Warden | Entry operative — field enforcement, protection detail |
| Senior Warden | Team lead — three to six operatives |
| Factor | Unit commander — twenty to forty operatives, significant operational autonomy |
| High Factor | Regional command — multiple units, strategic deployment |
| Primus | Commander of the Auric — single appointment, Pure-tier direct report |
Mandate¶
In order of frequency:
Protection — escort and security for Pure and Refined tier principals, Guild administrative sessions.
Enforcement — collection of Guild debts and obligations unresolved through financial channels, removal of individuals from Guild facilities, internal disciplinary matters.
Suppression — external threats to Guild infrastructure or information security, including management of individuals who have obtained Guild-classified material.
Execution — the category that does not appear in public-facing descriptions. Specific operations authorised by the Pure tier or the Primus against specific targets. Logged in a classified internal record, reviewed annually by a Pure-tier panel, then sealed.
Investigation — internal Guild security intelligence. Who within the institution knows what they should not know.
The Primus — Commander Asha Veyne¶
Age: 49 Designation: High Cultured — nominally below Refined tier, deliberately so Implant profile: Full Auric operational stack — above standard Cultured tier, below the cognitive augmentation that would require Refined classification. The gap is legal, not technical. Status: Active, Auric Central Command, Tessera administrative district
Who She Is¶
Asha Veyne is the most powerful person in the Veridion system who does not appear in any public record of the Veridion system's powerful people. This is her primary professional achievement and she has spent twenty-six years constructing it.
She tested into the Auric's training program at seventeen — one of twelve candidates out of sixty-four who completed the full qualification process. She was not the highest-scoring candidate. She was the one the assessment panel rated most accurately on a quality the Auric measures but does not name in its official documentation: the capacity to make a decision that cannot be explained to anyone and live with it afterward without it becoming a problem.
Twenty-six years later she is the Primus. She has made decisions of that kind approximately forty times in her career and they have not become problems.
Presence¶
She is not physically imposing. Average height, average build — the kind of person a transit hub crowd absorbs without registering. She has been in the same room as people she has subsequently ordered operations against and they have not recognised her. She cultivates this.
Her rank insignia is worn on the inside of a collar rather than the outside. The people who need to know what it means know. The people who don't, don't.
She does not raise her voice. She does not carry a weapon in visible locations. She has been directing operatives significantly more physically capable than herself for twenty-six years, and the technique for doing this is not volume — it is being completely certain that what she has decided is what will happen.
How She Operates¶
She briefs personally for any operation at Factor level or above. She reads every investigation report from her intelligence function before it goes to the archival record. She has not delegated these functions in eleven years — the period since a report was archived that should have been flagged to her first and wasn't, with consequences she spent four years managing.
She does not punish mistakes loudly. She notes them in a specific way that the person who made them understands completely and that leaves nothing in the official record. None of the forty-one people she has noted in this way has repeated the mistake.
The Current Crisis¶
The Hephaistos-9 incident was not an Auric operation. Veyne knows this, which means she knows that a suppression operation of significant scale was conducted using Guild-adjacent intelligence without her authorisation or knowledge. She has been working out who authorised it and through which channel.
She has arrived at Orvyn Lace. She has not moved against him yet — the Pure tier's internal politics are above her operational mandate, and moving against a Pure-tier principal without an airtight case would end her career in a way that would not be described as ending. She is building the case.
She does not know about Janus. She does not know about the data module. She does not know the boarding action failed to recover what it went for. This information would be relevant to her calculation. She does not have it yet.
Relationship to Syndra Vael¶
Eighteen years of adjacent operations. They respect each other in the specific way of two people who understand exactly where the boundaries are and have learned not to test them.
Syndra has never asked Veyne to conduct an Auric operation on her behalf. Veyne has never conducted one without Syndra's awareness when it touched Syndra's networks. This mutual restraint is the foundation of their working relationship.
It is also increasingly strained. Veyne knows Syndra knows more about the Hephaistos-9 situation than she has disclosed. Syndra knows Veyne is building a case against Lace. Neither has raised either of these things directly. The conversation is pending.
Relationship to Other Institutions¶
Vanguard Orbital: Formally, peer institutions with non-overlapping mandates. Informally, significant tension — Vanguard considers the Auric an internal police force operating at the boundary of Vanguard's registered security monopoly. The Guild-Vanguard war has made this considerably more pointed.
Praxis Biomechanica: The Auric's implant infrastructure is Praxis-supplied. This creates a dependency that both parties are aware of. The Auric's vulnerability to the Flicker — which destroys implant hardware — is a classified strategic concern.
The Underworld: The Auric treats the syndicates as a management problem rather than a threat, with one exception: the House of Weights' unlicensed implant removal operation receives active Auric attention because unlicensed removal threatens the Guild's population management infrastructure. Auric operatives working the Underlay develop working relationships with syndicate operators over time. The institution manages this carefully.
