Convergence — Why They Go

This note is the single canonical source for how the Return team comes together and why. The events are assembled in Deeptown (Chapter 6) and seeded across the arc files; this page collects them in one place so the team's composition and motivation do not have to be reconstructed from six separate arcs.

The Frame — A Coalition, Not a Mission¶

There is no single shared cause. The team is a convergence of separate motives that happen to point the same direction. From Deeptown:

"Nobody here has signed up for a mission. They are each going because they have a reason of their own that happens to point in the same direction."

The one thing underneath all of them is a clock. The Azimuth growth curve has a date on it — roughly eleven weeks out — so as Ana puts it: "We don't have six months." They are not moving toward something so much as moving before it moves toward them.

Where & When — Deeptown, Korrath IV¶

The team assembles at Deeptown, the Rust Alliance's largest inhabited surface installation on Korrath IV. Three zones matter: the transit fringe (where Janus and, separately, Gelon & Yamar arrive), the residential section (Ana's room, where the analysis runs), and the Level Three work canteen (neutral ground, where Seren meets Ana).

How they meet — the mechanics¶

Janus finds Ana. He arrives via the Rust Alliance salvage approach Syndra arranged (the cipher from berth 7-C at Meridian Hub), three days out of The Tessera, and finds Ana at the third address on Syndra's list. "You're late." … "Did you bring it?" He puts the data module on the desk.
Seren meets Ana. Both have independently been using the House of Weights–adjacent contact network; a shared contact introduces them in the Level Three canteen. Seren asks a probe-telemetry question in inner-world Guild terms; Ana stops, he shows her the document, and she recognises it: "The document you're carrying is a parameter reference for a probe telemetry model. It is the specific parameter I cannot derive from my primary dataset without six to eight months I do not have." She brings him to Janus.
Yamar & Gelon arrive — at Korrath IV's fringe anchorage via the Kael Belt Compact network, between routes, not looking for anyone. This is the third crossing with Seren (see below). Yamar finds Seren in the transit canteen, asks "What did you find?", hears about the document, Ana, and Janus — and goes to get Gelon.
MEET GELON — the pivot. Gelon comes to Ana's room, sees the data module in Janus's kit case: "The module is from the Hephaistos station… They found the bearing." Janus: "How do you know about a bearing?" Gelon: "I have been watching the azimuth of that coordinate for twenty years." The room goes quiet. The two halves of the story realise they have been tracking the same thing.
The decision — "We go back." After a night of combined analysis (Ana's model + Gelon's twenty years of observation + Seren's parameter), the model resolves further than ever. Ana says it, not Janus.
Mirai joins at departure. Her TAP-7 message arrives — "I know you're there." They don't wait the three days; she is standing outside as they leave with gear. "Then I'm coming. Nobody objects."

The three crossings (Gelon & Yamar ↔ Seren)¶

They meet by accident three times before any of them treats it as a pattern (parallel.md). First (Anchor era): a transaction at an outer transit waystation — Gelon notices Seren's implant luminescence, says nothing. Second (post-Anchor / Transit): same waystation by coincidence; a complication they navigate together, where Gelon first tells Seren the luminescence sits on a frequency he tracks in the Flicker's signal register. Third (Deeptown): the convergence above.

⚠️ The specific content of the first transaction and the second complication is a canon gap — placeholders in the arc files. The shape is fixed; the specifics aren't written.

Why Each One Goes¶

Seren	He's been carrying the missing parameter without knowing it. Leaving the inner worlds was running from the implant; going to Hephaistos-9 is choosing to move toward the phenomenon that might destroy it, to understand it. Mirai	The three who died at Cinder-7 were her people. She's tracked Janus for the reckoning, deferred until after the station: "Before Hephaistos-9… After Hephaistos-9, if either of us is still standing." Former Vanguard special ops; the window is closing.	primary.md; deeptown.md

Why they cohere: Ana's discovery is the one object each separate need runs through — a parameter Seren happens to carry, a bearing Gelon has watched for twenty years, a choice Janus needs to make, a debt Mirai needs to settle, a ship only Yamar can fly — all under a clock that denies anyone their original solo plan.

The Ship¶

They travel to Hephaistos-9 in the Vagabond — Yamar and Gelon's small, old, unarmed Rust Alliance salvage collector, rebuilt from a derelict. Yamar's piloting of its salvage approach profile is the team's means of passage; the ship's worthless-looking profile is the camouflage.

The load-bearing secret — what the secondary signal actually is, and what on the module justified a kill team — is deliberately unwritten.
The content of the first/second Yamar–Seren crossings is sketched, not written.
The exact wording of Gebreysius's note, the Flicker's 0.3-second response, and Seren's line to his father are reserved.
