Territory: Outer rings
Power base: Heavy isotope mining, fusion fuel supply
Population: Unmodified workers, Apex Industrial debtors
Status: Discovering unexpected strategic advantage

Overview

The faction the system runs on and tries not to think about. No implants — a combination of economic exclusion and deliberate cultural rejection. This has become, unexpectedly, a strategic asset:

The Rust Alliance are immune to the Flicker's neural effects.

They do not advertise this.

The Secret Advantage

Relationship to Flicker: Immune (mechanism unknown — possibly EM shielding from mining equipment, possibly simple absence of implant hardware).

The Allianz leadership is aware of this advantage and has chosen silence over disclosure. This immunity makes them the only faction that can operate normally as neural implants fail system-wide.

Economy & Social Structure

  • Apex Industrial Dominance: Apex debt contracts dominate outer-ring life. Workers sign on for equipment, transit, or survival costs and spend years paying them off at interest rates that are legal and punitive.
  • No Formal Skills Required: Apex contracts require only presence and compliance. The work is dangerous. The margins are narrow. The alternatives are worse.
  • Informal Networks: Unlike the Guild's structured hierarchy, the Alliance runs on personal networks, salvage operations, and inter-family arrangements.

Terminology

Term Register Usage Notes
Scrappy Friendly / neutral Used within the Allianz and by sympathetic outsiders Carries connotations of resourcefulness, self-sufficiency, and earned toughness
Wrecker Hostile / contemptuous Used by inner-world populations, Guild administrators, and Praxis security The Allianz have largely stopped minding it. Some wear it as a badge.

Relationship to Hephaistos-9

Salvage lanes pass near the ejection trajectory from the station. They will encounter what escapes.

The Allianz proximity to the outer edges means they're positioned to recover anything that leaves Hephaistos-9 — whether by design or accident.

Relationship to The Fabric

Overlap suspected. The Fabric recruits from expendable margins. The Allianz runs on expendable people. Connection suspected but not confirmed.

Current Strategic Position

With the Guild vulnerable to Flicker and Vanguard transforming into an independent power, the Alliance's immunity becomes increasingly valuable. The question is whether they understand it's become an asset worth fighting for.
