The Fabric
Nature: Decentralized intelligence network
Territory: None — operates in spaces between factions and corporations
Power base: Information, network access, human resources
Population: Recruited from expendable margins
Status: Active, expanding operations
Overview¶
The Fabric is a decentralized intelligence network. It has no headquarters, no public name, no registered legal existence. It operates in the spaces between the factions and corporations — through dead-drop buoys, rotating ciphers, and people who look like maintenance technicians.
It is not a faction. It does not hold territory. It holds information.
Operations¶
Communication Infrastructure¶
- Dead-drop buoys on pirate frequencies
- Rotating cipher keys, distributed by unknown protocol
- Human couriers operating under cover identities
Recruitment¶
The Fabric recruits from the system's expendable population: - People the factions have discarded - People deep in Apex debt - Ex-military on bad contracts - Maintenance workers in the wrong place at the wrong time
People who have nothing left to protect by staying invisible.
Intelligence Focus¶
Suspected to be aggregating information on the Flicker across all three factions and three megacorporations simultaneously.
Whether they are doing this to: - Sell it - Act on it - Simply to know it
...is not established in current canon.
The Underlay Presence¶
The Fabric has significant operational presence in The Underlay — the unregistered lower district of Caelindra Prime where unmodified faces do not attract attention. This makes it the closest physical nexus between the Guild and the network.
Relationship to the Factions¶
- Synapse-Guild: Operates in the Underlay, recruiting from excluded populations; Syndra Vael is aware of overlap but does not move against them
- Rust Alliance: Suspected overlap; the Alliance runs on expendable people, and the Fabric recruits from them
- Fracture Synths: Unknown relationship; no active operations known
Known Operations¶
Emergency Relay Protocol¶
Hephaistos-9's maintenance terminal has an emergency relay — a short-range burst transmitter capable of pinging Fabric dead-drop buoys on pirate frequencies. Whether Janus's use of this relay connects him to the Fabric, or whether it was simply a last-resort distress system, is not yet established.
Field Intelligence¶
- Miri Sothen (Guild Graft-tier operative) maintains sources in Deeptown, on Meridian Hub's lower decks, in Allianz transit worker networks, and — one contact she has never disclosed to her superiors — somewhere in the Fabric.
The Fourth Power Question¶
The Fabric is sometimes described as operating like a "fourth power" alongside the three factions and three corporations. More accurately, it operates between them, with no direct political allegiance but with clear intelligence objectives around the Flicker phenomenon.
