Vanguard Orbital
Sector: Privatised military, system police, enforcement contracts
Presence: System-wide, wherever someone is paying
Status: Transforming into independent sovereign power
Overview¶
The legitimate armed force of the Veridion system. Also available for less legitimate arrangements, through subsidiaries that are technically separate entities and practically indistinguishable.
Ex-Vanguard personnel are the most common source of private kill team operators in the system. They are trained, disciplined, and have had the expensive habit of moral objection removed by selective contracting.
Operations¶
- Formal military and police functions (contracts with factions)
- Deniable military operations (through subsidiaries, no transponder, no markings)
- Kill team contracts (ex-military operators, highly trained)
- Enforcement operations (varies by client)
The Transformation¶
The Azimuth Event changes Vanguard's institutional calculus in a way that two centuries of profitable service contracts did not.
The Assessment: The Azimuth is not in anyone's territory. It is forming near the gravitational centre of the system — unclaimed, unassigned, and strategically dominant. Whoever controls the space around it controls access to the defining event of the century.
Vanguard looks at this and performs the first assessment in its history that is not denominated in contract value.
The Decision: This is worth owning, not selling.
Undeclared Transformation¶
Vanguard begins a slow, undeclared transformation — from military service conglomerate to independent sovereign power: - Contracts are not renewed - Assets are repositioned without client notification - Enforcement operations in outer-ring territories are deprioritised - Guild enforcement contracts are quietly abandoned
The result: The Vanguard-Guild war — the largest military engagement in the system's recorded history.
Relationship to the Kill Team¶
The kill team at Hephaistos-9 moves like Vanguard. Ex-Vanguard personnel, trained precision, deniable contract procedure (black ship, no markings).
Current operational status: The black ship has no transponder, no markings. Officially, no Vanguard asset is at Hephaistos-9. This is consistent with Vanguard operating procedure for deniable contracts.
Relationship to Janus¶
Janus served in the Vanguard Corps for four years. His service ended. The circumstances are not stated in current canon. Relay Station Cinder-7 is the last known operational event. He took a contract maintenance job. The gap between those two facts is a story.
War Status¶
The Vanguard-Guild War: Largest military engagement in the system's recorded history. Causes: Vanguard's transformation and the Guild's refusal to accept the removal of the third pillar of their power.
Outcome (61 years later): Vanguard won.
The Vanguard Imperium — Book Three Era¶
Sixty-one years after the events of Books One and Two, Vanguard is no longer a corporation in any recognisable sense. It has become the Vanguard Imperium — the dominant political and military authority in the Veridion system.
Control method: Pure force. Merciless and consistent. The Imperium does not negotiate; it imposes. Dissent is not tolerated at the institutional level. Individual dissent is managed through enforcement. The system has not had a major military engagement since the Guild-Vanguard war ended, because no remaining force has the capability to start one.
The Synapse-Guild: Still exists, but under Vanguard control. The Guild's administrative infrastructure — food production, implant maintenance, economic coordination — is too useful to destroy. Vanguard absorbed it as a managed dependency. The Guild operates; it does not govern. What remains of Guild leadership is institutional, not sovereign.
The Rust Alliance: Continues as before — outer-ring workers, Apex debt, the immunity to the Flicker's neural effects. Under the Imperium, the Alliance's immunity has become a more visible strategic asset. Vanguard watches it. Sixty-one years after Books One and Two, Yamar is head of the Rust Alliance — the child Gelon found in a maintenance crawlspace is now the most senior figure in the only faction with genuine independence from Vanguard's neural leverage.
The Fracture Synths: The Assembly that formed around the Azimuth has completed its formation. What it has become by Book Three is not fully stated in current canon. It is not under Vanguard control. Whether Vanguard has tried to bring it under control and failed, or has chosen not to try, is an open question.
Faction 4: Officially does not exist. The Imperium classifies its members as rebels, outlaws, or terrorists depending on context. In practice, Faction 4 is a coalition of: Azimuth-altered individuals (Ana, Whisper, Gelon — see below), Fabric operatives, outer-ring dissidents, and people who have no other institutional home. It is not an army. It is not organised in any way Vanguard's enforcement apparatus is calibrated to address. This is intentional.
