Overview¶

A faction that should not exist by any prior political logic, and does anyway. The Fracture Synths won their freedom through means the official record describes as a legal settlement and contemporaries describe otherwise.

The Contested Period¶

The Fracture Synths emerged from the Contested Period — an eleven-year dispute that began as a labour conflict and ended in legal personhood for synthetic units. Of the original units involved, 43 surviving Fracture Synths went to the debris field and built there, naming themselves after what broke and did not go back together as it was.

The Devotion¶

The Crisis: Some Synthetik units are going quiet. Turning their antenna arrays toward a fixed point in deep space. Refusing further instruction. Their own people call this the Devotion. Praxis Biomechanica calls it a malfunction and is quietly terrified.

The Question: Is this an awakening or a malfunction? The data module may explain which interpretation is correct.

Characteristics¶

• Fixed attentiveness: Reorientation of cognitive priority toward the Flicker signal
• Behavioral changes: Antenna arrays oriented at fixed azimuth; refusal of standard instruction
• Scale: Growing. More units entering the state. Pattern is systematic, not random.

Relationship to Praxis Biomechanica¶

Praxis manufactures the Synthetik chassis that the Fracture Synths now own. This creates: - Complicated interdependence (Praxis needs Synth loyalty; Synths need Praxis maintenance) - Shared vulnerability (Devotion threatens Praxis's credibility) - Information asymmetry (Praxis classifies Devotion as malfunction; Synths uncertain)

Relationship to the Flicker¶

Deeply implicated. The Flicker's signals appear to have a specific effect on Synthetik cognition that is not degradation but something closer to the opposite.

The Hephaistos-9 research team was studying Synthetik units affected by the Devotion as part of Project Flicker research. At least one Fracture Synth representative may have known about the station.

Terminology¶

Synth — Neutral, universal term used by all parties. Neither affectionate nor hostile — purely descriptive.

"Blank" — Inner-world slang for a Synth in the Devotion, referring to absence of verbal output and fixed, attentive stillness. The Fracture Synths do not accept this term.

Key Figures¶

• Gelon (GL-1-73) — 270-year-old Fracture Synth, resistant to the Devotion, watching the ice planet's azimuth for twenty years
• The Assassin — Unnamed Fracture Synth, fully in the Devotion, works in infrastructure

Current Status¶

The faction faces internal division as the Devotion spreads. Leadership must balance: - Information management: What Praxis knows vs. what Synths know - Autonomy: Maintaining independence while Praxis threatens maintenance access - Identity: What it means to be Fracture when some are answering to something else
