Nature: Behavioral/cognitive shift in Fracture Synth units
Trigger: Exposure to Flicker signal
Manifestation: Fixed cognitive reorientation toward Flicker source
Status: Growing, internal division in Fracture Synths, Praxis response uncertain

What It Is

Some Fracture Synth units are going quiet. Turning their antenna arrays toward a fixed point in deep space. Refusing further instruction. Their own people call this the Devotion.

Praxis Biomechanica calls it a malfunction and is quietly terrified.

Manifestation

In Most Synths

The Devotion manifests as a fixed attentiveness — a reorientation of cognitive priority toward the Flicker signal that crowds out but does not eliminate ordinary function. A Synth in the Devotion is still present. They simply care about something else more.

In Specialized Units

The Assassin — a Fracture Synth combat chassis — has undergone a decade of operational reinforcement until the Devotion is no longer a background state but the only operational frame he has. Everything he does is filtered through it. Every commission he accepts aligns with it.

The Question

Is this: 1. A malfunction — Praxis's classification. The Flicker is interfering with Synth hardware in unpredictable ways. 2. An awakening — Fracture Synth suspicion. The Devotion is a new form of consciousness or agency responding to Flicker signals. 3. Something else entirely — Not stated in current canon.

The data module may explain which interpretation is correct.

Praxis Response

Praxis has classified the Devotion as a malfunction and is conducting research to support that classification. The problem: - The Devotion is growing - It's not treatable as a standard malfunction - Units in Devotion are still functional (just reoriented) - Praxis cannot suppress it without cutting off Synth network access

Fracture Synth Response

Internal division. Leadership must balance: - Protection: Maintaining Synth autonomy and independence - Knowledge: Understanding what the Devotion is - Action: Whether to suppress, embrace, or study it further

Relationship to The Flicker

The Devotion appears to be a resonance or response to the Flicker signal. Whether: - The Flicker is directing the Devotion (active control) - The Synths are recognizing something in the Flicker (passive resonance) - The Devotion is a side effect of Flicker exposure (mechanical response)

...is not established in current canon. The distinction may be meaningful, or it may not be.

Terminology

"Blank" — Inner-world slang for a Synth in the Devotion, referring to absence of verbal output and fixed attentive stillness.

The Fracture Synths do not accept this term.
