Overview¶

The Flicker is the fourth power in the Veridion system — not a faction, not a corporation, but a phenomenon that is reshaping the balance of power.

What happens when the Flicker signal is near a neural implant: Degradation, failure, destruction. Depends on hardware, proximity, strength of signal.

What happens when the Flicker signal is near a Synthetik unit: Not degradation. Something closer to the opposite. Attentiveness, reorientation, answering to something else. The Devotion.

The Structured Signal¶

Ana Hamato found a structured signal within the Flicker noise — one that was originally categorized as instrumental noise by the research team but is actually:

Repeating patterns suggesting intentionality
Predictive models of something forming at the system's gravitational center
Complex enough to require significant computational resources to decode

The Hephaistos-9 team's final weeks were spent beginning to decode these models. The kill team was dispatched before that work could leave the station.

Vulnerable. Their entire cognitive advantage rests on implant-mediated cognition. The Flicker destroys implants. They've been suppressing this for eight years.

Rust Alliance¶

Immune. No implants means no degradation. They are discovering an unexpected strategic advantage (and keeping it secret).

Fracture Synths¶

Affected. The Devotion effect is growing. Whether it's malfunction or awakening is the central question.

Praxis Biomechanica¶

Threatened. The Devotion threatens their entire product line credibility. They're classifying it as malfunction, but they don't know if that's true.
